Why did I choose to study Japanese?

Some of my favorite shows I watched on television as a kid were Sailor Moon and Pokémon; as for movies, it was hands-down all of the Studio Ghibli/Hayao Miyzaki films. Since then, I have grown to love and appreciate all the awesome aspects of the Japanese culture. The anime created is unlike any other type of cartoon I have seen and the cuisine always makes my stomach happy. So much so that I one day want to travel there. As a student at Columbia, a goal of mine is to study abroad in Japan and understand and experience the culture first-hand. Back home, I am spoken to with a mixture of three Filipino dialects: Tagalog, Ilocano, and Visayan. I find comfort in hearing my family's language and I can only feel enthusiastic to exposing myself to more Asian languages. By taking Japanese, I am excited to further my linguistic skills and just have fun with others learning it!

  1. I can completely empathize with your excitement in learning a new Asian language! Similarly, some of my favorite childhood memories are watching anime in the living room with my brother.
On another note, I think we used *almost* the same GIF with the girl studying. Except the GIF I used was definitely hand-drawn by someone.
Good luck, and I hope we can continue practicing with each other!!

  2. Ah, Studio Ghibli movies made up a large portion of my childhood as well! I speak another language besides English and learning new languages has always been fun to me! And, I relate to the gif of the girl studying. Nazikian-sensei, please have mercy on us!

  3. Like Anne mentioned, I completely understand what it feels like to learn a new Asian language! I don't think I have as good of a knowledge in the field of anime, but I can agree that Miyazaki films never disappoint. It is amazing that at times, illustrations can embody so much emotional depth, even more than some of the live action films. On the one hand, illustrations are pure idealization, something that surpasses reality, but we can also feel something so real, so strong. I guess it's something to think about!
